Section 10-1: Quadratic Functions Quadratic Functions are used to solve problems about vertical motion. They are written in standard form y = ax² + bx + c. The general shape of quadratic functions are parabolas, a U-shaped graph.

Parabolas either open up or down. If a < 0, then the parabola opens up. If a > 0, then the parabola opens down.

The graph of the parabola contains a point called the vertex. The vertex is also known as the minimum, if the parabola opens up, or the maximum, if the parabola opens down.

To Find the Vertex:
First find the x-coordinate by using the formula, x = -b/2a. Then use the x-value to substitute into the equation and solve for y.

To Find the Y-Intercept:
Substitute x with zero and solve for y. (0, y)

To Find the X-Intercepts:
Substitute the y-coordinate with zero and factor. Set up mini equations to solve for x. There are two x-intercepts.
