9-5 Factoring Difference of Squares

This section will teach how to factor differences of squares. It covers a number of factoring techniques used with simplifying the difference of squares. It also covers solving equations of differences of squares by factoring and applying the Zero Product Property. Differences of squares are binomials not trinomials because the middle term cancels out.

Product of a Sum and Difference

The product of a + b and a-b is a2 – b2.

(a + b)(a – b) = a2 – b2


The Square of a Sum

The square of a + b is the square of a plus twice the product of a and b plus the square of b.

(a + b)2 = (a + b)(a + b)
a2 + 2ab + b2


Square of a Difference

The square of a-b is square of a minus twice the product of a and b plus the square of b.

(a – b)2 = (a – b)(a – b)
= a2 – ab – ab + b2
= a2 – 2ab + b2
